A wicked ice princess sets out to freeze and capture Earth for her planetary collection. But Sailor Moon and her tight-knit group of gal pals will have nothing of the sort. Paced more for the love story fan, this episode focuses on a handsome young astronomer, Kakeru, who discovers a mysterious crystal needed by Princess Snow Kaguya to carry out her plan. Soon after finding the crystal, Kakeru develops a deep friendship with Luna (Sailor Moon’s cat), a friendship that eventually leads to the Sailors’ discovery of the Earth’s predicament and to each character’s discovery of the tremendous powers of love and justice–all in about an hour.
Despite its slower pace, this feature incorporates all the positive qualities other Sailor Moon episodes share: sharp, eye-catching artwork; humorous but heartfelt communication among the girls; an understandable plot line; and plenty of flashy transforming. Further enhancements include an intelligent soundtrack (a nice balance of kooky sci-fi and seriously beautiful tunes) and the introduction of the “Outer Senshi.” This slightly older, more mature group of young women–Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto–join our regular band of bubble-spraying, crescent-beaming skirt tossers to melt the ice princess once and for all. The dubbed movie (tagged with the new title of Hearts in Ice) is an edited version of the subtitled film. Some language and violence (a few frames) have been altered. Due to the inclusion of mild nudity (imagine a spinning, naked Barbie), parents may want to think twice before offering this movie to fans younger than 6. William Steig’s delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre’s swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it’s the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its crosstown rival, Disney. –Doug Thomas

The flood itself–in which a wall of water 50 feet tall destroyed the town of Johnstown and everything in the vicinity–is chock-full of shocking and engrossing details: personal testimonies describe an entire roundhouse of locomotives being swept away; a mother tells about setting her children afloat on driftwood from the top of her rapidly submerging house. When the debris carried by rushing water reaches a heavy stone bridge, the cataclysm only worsens, leading to a devastating fire. Summary of Movie
Fans of Ricky Martin will need no encouragement to buy One Night Only other than knowing it exists, so it’s commendable that what they will get is a pretty good package after all. On the down side, without the kind of slick studio production accorded to his albums it’s clear that Martin’s voice is, well, rather ordinary. But on the up side, he’s beautiful, he’s great fun, he’s not short on stage presence, and his enthusiasm for the Latin music of his native Puerto Rico is entirely genuine.
There’s a spooky moment in the opening number of this huge 1999 gig (which took place in Liberty State Park in New York) as the backdrop artfully falls to reveal the twin towers of the World Trade Center framing Martin like Samson’s pillars. Once this frisson passes it’s good times all the way, with the inevitable “Vida Loca” and “La Copa de la Vida” as highlights, plus guest spots from Carlos Santana and José Feliciano. –Roger Thomas
